Using Groups

Browse the UNLV Groups Directory to find groups that interest you. Join an open group or leave a group whenever you want. With Google Groups, you will be able to:

  • Find and join groups created by other students in the UNLV Groups Directory.
  • Communicate and collaborate with classmates using a group e-mail address.
  • Read and respond to posts through Rebelmail and/or the online discussion forum.
  • Use Google's powerful search engine to find messages sent to your groups.

Getting Started

Joining a Group 

Overview of your Google Groups Homepage

From your Google Groups homepage, you can view and access all of your groups, search for a group in the Groups Directory, search for messages within your groups, and update your Google Groups profile. To access your Google Groups page, just click Groups located at the top of your Rebelmail page, or, go directly to http://groups.google.com/a/unlv.nevada.edu.

Search Groups

Enter your search text (whole words only) and click on the Search button to find specific messages within all your Groups.

 

My Groups

Click on My groups to view a list of all your groups.

 

Browse all

The UNLV Google Groups Directory is a browsable listing of all Google groups created by Rebelmail users (group owners can choose to hide it). Click on Browse all to view the list of groups in the directory.

 

New group

Click on New group to create your own group.

 

Navigation Tree

The Navigation Tree allows you to quickly access your groups, starred topics, recently searches and posts, and favorites. 

Find Groups in the Groups Directory

The Google Groups directory is a browsable listing of all UNLV Google Groups. All newly created groups are automatically added to the UNLV Groups Directory. To access the UNLV Google Groups directory, just click on the Browse all button from your Google Groups homepage.

You can also search for a group by using the search box (whole words only) at the very top of any Google Groups page.

Subscribe to a Group

You can subscribe to any group in the UNLV Groups Directory that is open to new members. Some groups let you subscribe directly, while others might require you to send a request to the group owners or managers. Rebelmail users can subscribe to a group through the web interface or via e-mail. 

Subscribe through the web interface

  1. Go directly to the group's webpage or access it through the Group Directory.
  2. Next to the group name, you will see one of the following buttons depending on how the group is setup: 
    • Join group: Anyone can join the group.
    • Apply to join group: You must apply to join the group. The group owner and managers can approve or deny your request.
    • Request an invite to this group: You must request an invitation from the owner to join the group.

  3. Choose your nickname and your e-mail delivery option.
  4. Click Apply to this group

Subscribe via e-mail

You may subscribe to a public group via e-mail by sending an e-mail to groupname-group+subscribe@unlv.nevada.edu. For example, if you would like to subscribe to a group with the e-mail address tech-talk-group@unlv.nevada.edu, you would send an e-mail to tech-talk-group+subscribe@unlv.nevada.edu. After you have sent the e-mail, you will receive a reply with further instructions. 

Manage Your E-mail Delivery Options

Google Groups allows you to receive messages sent to your groups in many different ways. You can choose to receive each message sent to the group separately, or a summary of the messages sent to your groups once a day. You can change your e-mail delivery preferences by doing the following:

  1. From your Google Groups homepage, click on the My groups button. 
  2. Click on the Edit memberships button to see a list of all the groups that you are a member of.
  3. In the drop-down menu for a group, select from one the following e-mail delivery options:
    • No E-mail: You will not receive messages sent to the group in your inbox. You can visit the group's webpage to read messages.
    • Abridged E-mail: Once a day, you will receive a summary of new messages.
    • Digest E-mail: Once a day, you will receive full messages bundled into a single message.
    • Email: You will receive each message sent to the group separately.

Participating in a Group 

Create a New Topic

When you create a new topic you are also creating the first post in the topic. You can create new topics through the group's webpage or via e-mail. 

Create a New Topic via the Webpage

To create a new topic via the web, do the following: 

  1. From the group's webpage, click on the New Topic
  2. Type in the post's Subject
  3. Select the type of post of the following:
    • Ask a question: General posts where members of the group can read and response.
    • Start a discussion: Q&A posts where questions can be assigned to other members to answer.
    • Make an announcement: Posts containing an announcement.
  4. Check the box next to Display at the top if you wish to create the topic at the top of the topic list. This option is only available to group owners.
  5. Check the box next to Lock if you wish to prevent members from replying to the topic. The option is only available to group owners.
  6. Click on the Attach a file link if you would like to add an attachment.
  7. Type in the content of your topic. Add formatting as needed using the tools in the formatting toolbar.
  8. Click on the Post button to post the message.

Create a New Topic via E-mail

You can also create a new topic by sending an e-mail to the group's e-mail address. The subject line of the e-mail will be the title of the topic, and the body of the e-mail will be the content of the first post. 

Read and Respond to Posts

You can read and respond to posts using the group's webpage or via Rebelmail. To response to a post via e-mail, simply reply to the group e-mail message. To respond to posts via the group's webpage, do the following:

  1. From the group's webpage, click on the topic you want to read. The original post is listed at the top, followed by the responses.
  2. Click on the Post reply button to the right of any post that you wish to reply to.

  3. Type your reply in the body of the message and click Post.

View a Group's Members List

You can review your group registry by doing the following:

  1. From the group's webpage, click on the Members button.

  2. You can now see the list of all members in that group. Mouse-over the name of a member to view his or her groups profile.

Follow a Topic

If you find a topic that you wish to follow closely, you can do it in one of two ways:

Star a Topic

You can star topics by clicking on the star icon located to the left of the topics that you wish to follow.

From your homepage, you can view your starred topics for all your groups by clicking on the Starred link in the left sidebar. 

E-mail notifications

You can also follow a topic via e-mail notifications. This is especially helpful for those who are not a member of a public group but would like to follow a topic. To receive e-mail notifications when a specific topic has been updated, do the following:

  1. Open the topic that you wish to follow.
  2. Click on the E-mail updates to me icon located above the Post reply button. Now anytime the discussion thread has an update, you will receive an e-mail with the updated information 

Delete a Post

Group owners and managers can delete any message posted in their groups' webpage, while regular members can only delete their own posts. Keep in mind that when you delete a post from the group's webpage, the e-mail version of the post remains in the group member's inbox. To remove a post from the group's webpage, do the following:

  1. From the group's webpage, click on the post that you want to remove.
  2. Click the down arrow next to the Post reply button and select Delete post.

  3. Click on the OK button to delete the post.

Add Groups to Favorites

If you belong to many groups, you can use Favorites to quickly access and organize your most used groups.

To add a group to Favorites, just click on the star icon next to the group. To add the group to an existing folder, click on Change folders and select a folder from the drop-down menu. To add the group to a new folder, select New folder from the drop-down menu.


Leave a Group

Rebelmail users can leave a group through the My Groups page or by e-mail.

Leave from Your My Groups page

  1. From your Google Groups homepage, click on the My groups button. 
  2. Click on the Edit memberships button to see a list of all the groups that you are a member of.
  3. To the right of the group you wish to leave, click on the Manage membership link.
  4. From the pop-up window, click on the Leave group button.

Note: If you are the owner of a group, you must transfer ownership before leaving the group.

Leave via e-mail

You can unsubscribe via e-mail by sending an e-mail to groupname-group+unsubscribe@unlv.nevada.edu. For example, if you would like to leave the group tech-talk-group@unlv.nevad.edu, you could remove yourself by sending a blank e-mail to tech-talk-group+unsubscribe@unlv.nevada.edu. You will receive an e-mail with further instructions.
